Most of our pupils are online daily. While the internet is a brilliant tool, we must work together to keep them safe. At school, we use strict filters and supervision; at home, we recommend the following practical steps.
5 Golden Rules for Children
Keep it Private: Never share your last name, address, phone number, or school name. Assume everything you post is public.
Friends Only: Only message people you know in real life.
Check the Photo: Before posting, check the background for clues about where you live or go to school.
Be Kind: Online comments leave a digital footprint. Unkindness can have serious school or legal consequences.
Speak Up: If anything makes you feel uncomfortable, tell an adult immediately.
Managing Devices at Home
Family Spaces: Keep web-enabled devices in shared living areas rather than bedrooms.
Bedtime Ban: Collect devices at night to ensure your child gets quality sleep without distractions.
Parental Controls: Use built-in restrictions on iPads and tablets to filter content and monitor usage.
Social Networking (Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram etc)
Age Limits: Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter) require users to be 13+. If younger children use these, parents must take full responsibility for their safety.
Privacy Settings: Set accounts to “Friends Only,” but remember that even “private” posts can be screenshotted and shared.
Anonymity: Encourage children to share as little personal detail as possible on their profiles.
